day 29 of 50: Smell of Small Secret

Jacqueline: (sprig of rosemary)
still broken, still breaking

Amichai:

here's a secret: take the broken things, a wilting branch of rosemary, for instance, and turn them into art. Deep inside that broken branch is still, is always, fragrance of the possible.
Can I find kindness everywhere, each day, even, always in the seemingly sad?

A radiant Bat Mitzvah girl inspired me today, sharing her learning from a terrible human experience: Do something kind to someone else, each day.

She chanted the same verses from the Torah as I did 30(!) years ago, today. I mouthed along with her as I sat in the congregation, remembering the ancient blood of leviticus and each and every trope. And then spoke about her preparations, and just another teen's speech become a haunting tale of courage, and a good advice.

She interviewed a holocaust survivor, with a harrowing tale, whose message to her was: do something kind to someone else each day.
It was more nuanced than that, and an excellent speech and ended all about never forgetting the Holocaust, but she had me with that older woman's simple advice, and advice she learnt from her own mother, back in Warsaw: before you go to sleep ask yourself: have I done anything kind to anyone else today?

Turn that broken twig into a branch of beauty.

29. Hesed of Hod: The Kindness in Humility. A tender spot to start a week in which the task is to increase awareness of this secret that is life. Little daily acts of kindness.
