day 6 of 50: relic on the beach

Jacqueline: broken wooden moulding from the foot of my great-grandfather's bureau.

Amichai: What about the pieces of our past? What of our legacy to keep and what's worth shedding? My mother framed her great grandfather's beautiful scarf, but that's all we have. On my father's side - the words of great rabbis printed in books, the rest went up in the smoke stacks of Europe. And it's ok. History matters but the past at times becomes a cluttered burden, a psychic weight. We yearn secretly for some exodus that will compel us to give it all away. But meanwhile we carry it with us: their stories and stuff, heavier than bureaus full of treasures.
I think today, the seventh day of Passover, the sixth of this count, about the Hebrews fleeing Egypt, clutching dough, and drums, and loot (don't call it borrowed silver) and running, running through a sea of reeds and needs and awe and terror. What would I have packed? What would I have left behind. Don't look back, give one last caress to the banister and take a leap of faith into the future, hold on to the essentials. Go.
Yesod of Hesed - foundation within kindness, rock bottom basics, connecting the worlds within and beyond in a single string of simple being. I'd pack a song.

  1. When I was at Yad Vashem I saw the video of Amichai's uncle where he described rescuing Amichai's father. That film about their family is seared in my memory... very moving.

  2. Thanks Yona - it is however the other way around - the video is of my father talking about how he saved my uncle, his younger brother. It is a very moving story.

  3. Ouch, my memory is playing tricks on me. The Yad Vashem experience is so dense, I walked around in a daze. I do remember though walking away with from that film with a feeling of awe: your father's spirit was so positive in spite of his harrowing experiences.
